Lighting Design

UrineTown (2025)

Creating the World

UrineTown is a show that is set in many locations, which was created through the lighting since we had a very stationary set. We (me and my co-designer Leo Perry) used various different methods to achieve this through color, practical lights, and differentiating between warm and cool front light. The show opens with Lockstock and Little Sally, who both break the 4th wall, so in those moments we used blue lights and cool front light to make the rest of the world feel frozen and bring people to them. The amenity used caged Edison bulbs to look like work or sewer lights, making it feel run down and  not as cared for. The Secret Hideout used flying Edison bulb light fixtures and trashcan fires (made using an oil drum and a PAR with a slight flicker effect on it) to create the dark sewer that the rebels hide in. The UGC headquarters has no practical lights because they felt to warm and grunge, and we wanted the UGC to feel very different than where our rebels are, which brings us to the color pallet. The Rebels sat in the purple, green, and blue color pallet with warm front light, giving that steampunk, grunge vibe whereas the UGC sat in the white and yellow color palate with cool front light to give the complete opposite vibe and making the offices feel more rich and clean. We also used moving lights and festoon lights in dance sequences to make them feel more large and dynamic. The Rebel hideout also used the Festoon lights to make it feel very grimy and communicate emotions of characters.

The Diviners (2024)

Buddy's Life

This show follows the life of a boy named Buddy Layman, starting and ending with his death. Throughout the show I used Edison bulbs to foreshadow his death, flickering the one right above the place where he dies during heavily important moments of the show. Movers were used to create the water effects in the show and the colors were kept very natural to inform the realistic world of the characters.

A Midsummer Nights Dream (2022)

My First Lighting Design

Midsummer was my first time lighting designing and I worked with a great Co-Designer, Owen Pasternak, who taught me a lot about lighting. This show used a lot of colors to represent each different group of the show, like pink for the fairies, and neutral tones for the mechanicals. Designing a show with such a fun color palette was a great was to explore lighting for my first time.
